How do I get my U.S. DOT PIN Number?

Gather the necessary information:

  • U.S. DOT Number
  • Federal ID Number (FEIN)
  • Company official information
Step 1

Request an Access Code

Before the U.S. DOT resets and sends you the PIN Number, they will send you an access code. The access code is necessary to obtain your PIN Number. To obtain the access code, you will need to visit this website: click here for the access code website

Provide your:

  • U.S. DOT Number
  • Federal ID Number
  • Carrier Name
  • Company official
  • Official title

Do not close this page. You will return to it with an acess code to continue the PIN reset process

Step 2

Receive the Access Code

In Step 2, you have indicated on the access code website how you would like to have the access code be delivered to you (email and/or text message depending on whether the U.S. DOT has your email and/or cell phone number on file).

Depending on your delivery choice, check your email or phone for a text message

IMPORTANT: the access code is valid only for 10 minutes

Step 3

Use the Access Code to obtain the PIN Number

You should now have the Access Code. Go back to the website from Step 2 and enter it in the input box. Depending on your delivery choice, once you enter the access code, you will receive a text message or an email with your U.S. DOT PIN Number

If you receive an error, you most likely have taken longer than 10 minutes to use the access code. In such case, you will need to go back to step 2 and repeat the process, ensuring that it doesn't take more than 10 minutes. This time limit is imposed by the U.S. DOT for security purposes. Step 4

What you can do with the PIN Number

You now have your U.S. DOT PIN Number. Here are a few ways to use your PIN Number:

  • File the MCS150 Form
  • Tile the Biennial Update 390.201
  • Check your CSA Safety Score

Step 5
Congrats. You now have the U.S. DOT PIN Number

I cannot reset the PIN Number. What can I do?
If you're having problems resetting your PIN number, you can always submit forms manually in mail. These filings do not require a PIN number to validate your identify. However, manual filings take time to process and have a higher change of not being completed due to loss of data. Most importantly, you cannot access your CSA Safety Scores without the PIN number.

Do I have to file the MCS150 Form or the Biennial Update?

Yes: the Biennial Update has to be filed once every two years, on a specific month and year.

When? Look at your DOT Number. The last digit indicates the month when the update must be filed (1=January, 2=February, ... 0 = October). The second to last digit determines whether the update is to be filed on an odd or even year. An odd digit requires an update in an odd year and an even digit requires an update in an even year. For example: the DOT Number 1433431 would require an update in January of every odd-numbered year (2023, 2025, ...)

An MCS150 Update (not the Biennial Update) must be filed within 30 days of any change of information in your company. Example: phone number, address, number of vehicles or drivers, operation or hazmat types.
